Statement of Purpose (SOP) / Essay

The Statement of Purpose and Personal Essays are your opportunities to introduce yourself as the best fit for the program you are applying at a particular university.

SOP can help illuminate your overall profile and help your application make its way to the top of the reams of application forms which an admission committee has to scrutinize.

It is very important to understand that regardless of your academic profile, scores, experiences and extracurricular activities, an impressive Statement of Purpose and an essay can be a deciding factor in determining your candidacy in any program or scholarship scheme at a particular university.

  • Statement of Purpose

Why do you want to study in that particular university? What are your career plans after you complete your degree? How will you make the optimal use of education and opportunities that you will receive at that particular university? These are some of the questions that every university a student applies to would want to know. After all, top-notch universities make great efforts in finding the best-fitting students for their programs and their university.

Statement of Purpose (SOP) or Personal Essay is the chance a student gets to share their vision regarding their career and life with the university, the chance to explain to the university why they have chosen a particular program at their university AND NOT elsewhere.

Universities evaluate the research made by the student, their preparedness to study at their place through what they read in the student’s SOP. In case of graduate studies, SOP will be the requirement for almost all the universities. SOP offers you with a golden chance to:

    • Highlight the framework of your life upon which your academic and career goals are formulated.
    • Tell admission committee about you, your life background and your experiences,
    • Inform them about your achievements and aspirations
    • Make them aware about your goals and your strategies to fulfill those ultimate goals.
    • Explain to them how your admission t the university will be a win-win situation for you as well as the university.

  • Essays

Essays are one of the mandatory requirements for most of the universities especially in case of undergraduate studies, management programs and many others.

    • Essays are the significant part of student’s application which can ‘make or break’ the admission in that university.
    • Essays open up the doors that lead the readers into student’s personality and give an insight about his/her unique characteristics.
    • Essays give a chance to stand out of the crowd and win an edge over other applicants by showing how the student’s goals and achievements fits best with that of the particular university
    • Essays serve as an instrument that the universities deploy to judge student’s creativity along with his/her writing abilities.

It is important to remember that all universities consider application essays as highly important in their admission process. A stellar student with a weak essay can increase his or her chances of rejection while an average student with an exceptional and well executed essay can easily get into his or her dream University.

  • Can you skip these Essays and SOP? Don’t even think about it!

  • Quality of Essay

We always encourage our students to work extremely hard while writing their essays. The key ingredients to a great essay are sincerity in the content of the essay, good writing ability and coverage of the pertinent issues (answers to the majors “Why” questions).

We have discussed earlier that essays can actually “make or break’ the applicant’s admission at a particular university. It is therefore very important that applicants draft a captivating essay.

    Let’s have a role reversal:

Imagine yourself into the place of admission committee. If you are required to read more than 500 essays daily, you will certainly desire for a refreshing and interesting essay that can captivate and hold your attention throughout the essay.

Students often assume that essays laden with high-end vocabulary warrant the reader’s attention. In that case, they may be in for a surprise as essays with only big words may, on the other hand, jeopardize student’s chances of admission into the university.

LETTER OF RECOMENDATION (LOR)

Letter of Recommendation (LOR) or Reference letter serves as a testimonial of your skills, abilities, character or achievements. It is one of the must-have requirements of your application process.

  • To get a better insight into the student’s profile.
  • To vouch for the facts mentioned in the other areas of application.
  • To evaluate student’s application in a holistic manner.
  • To see how the student meets the criteria for selection.
  • To get a perspective of someone who can testify student’s academic and professional abilities.
  • To distinguish student from other candidates.
  • To evaluate student’s scholarships eligibility.
  • To understand student’s motivations and values.

Usually, a student requires 2 or 3 recommendations depending upon the university’s requirements. In some cases, the universities may ask for more recommendations.

Now, the next step is finding the right recommenders!

For Under Graduate Level

At this level, mostly academic recommendations are useful.

  • The Principal of the school
  • Subject Teachers or Lecturers
  • Student Counselor
  • Head of the department
  • Project head

In case the applicant has work experience or internship to back up one’s profile, s/he can get recommendation from her/his supervisor or Manager.

For Graduate Level or Doctoral level

In this case, both academic and Professional recommendations are required. Both are mandatory for embellishing an applicant’s profile.

  • The Principal of the school
  • Subject Teachers or Lecturers
  • Student Counselor
  • Head of the department
  • Project head
  • Supervisors
  • Managers

A relevant and strong recommendation can really change the game for the applicant. That is why applicant-student should find out those solid recommenders and obtain recommendations from them.

Applicants may require convincing these recommenders, explaining them why their recommendation is so important and that they need not write anything unreal or untrue in the letter.

Generally, the following should be in the list of an applicant’s preferred recommenders:

  • Current Supervisor
  • Current Boss
  • Current Supervisor’s boss
  • Current teachers
  • Principal
  • Previous Boss
  • Course teachers (From recent academic degree)
  • Peers

There may be many people who fit the bill as a recommender and are willing to provide you with recommendations. However, it is highly important for applicants to choose their recommender wisely. The following points should be kept in mind while selecting recommender.

  • Recommender should know applicant (you) reasonably well.
  • Recommender should be well aware of your abilities and achievements.
  • Recommender should be able to show that he/she has a clear picture about your career goals.
  • Recommender should be able to provide honest and positive reference.
  • Recommender should be able to provide authenticity to your application with meaningful references from your life events.
  • Recommender should be able to give full cooperation required in filling online recommendation forms.
  • Recommender should recommend your application whole -heartedly.
  • Family member (Mom or dad)
  • Someone you don’t know that well, such as other department’s boss, friend’s teachers.
  • Someone you don’t trust or who is too busy or never on-time.

It is always better to get a recommendation from someone who knows who you are, what your interests are and understands what you are applying for.

A recommender should be able to substantiate his/her claims about your skills and abilities with his/her observation of you in real instances and situations. It is crucial that the recommender should not lie or fudge the truth.

Example:
Imagine you need to choose between two recommenders. One of them is your Math’s teacher who doesn’t know much about you since you have never been interested in Math’s Subject. He is ONLY aware that you are his student. Another recommender is your Computer Science teacher who knows you really well as you have worked under his direct supervision in numerous projects. He very well knows about your abilities and interest in the subject. So, your Computer Science teacher should be your obvious choice for recommendation as he can highlight your abilities in the real sense for he has closely worked with you and better evaluated your skills and learning abilities from a closer perspective.
