IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It assesses the English language skills of candidates who want to study, work or migrate to English speaking countries. It is owned and conducted jointly by IDP (IELTS Australia), the British Council, and the University of Cambridge. If you are planning to study in a country where English is spoken, it's likely that the IELTS Academic test is the right choice for you.The test assesses if you are ready to begin studying in English.
IELTS in a test center
You have the choice to take your test on paper or on a computer. There is no difference to the test questions, or format, only the way you complete your answers.
IELTS on computer
You can attend an official IELTS test centre and sit your test on a computer. Questions for the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are shown on the screen and you enter your answers on the computer.The Speaking section is completed during a face-to-face session with a trained IELTS examiner.
Results:Results for IELTS on the computer are available 3–5 days after test completion.
IELTS on paper
If you opt to take the test on paper you will sit at a desk with question-and-answer papers for the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of your test.The Speaking section of the test is conducted by a trained IELTS examiner.
Results:Results are available 13 days after test completion.
IELTS will transition to a fully computer-delivered test from mid-2026, offering faster results, more convenience, and features like One Skill Retake.
A new “Writing on Paper” option will also be introduced in selected markets for candidates who prefer handwriting.
There is no change to scoring, format, or global recognition of IELTS. All existing paper-based results remain valid for 2 years.
