If you are planning to study in the UK for the January 2027 or September 2027 intake, the rules you read about last year are no longer the full picture. Between October 2025 and September 2026 the UK Home Office introduced four changes that directly affect how Nepali students should prepare their applications:
None of these changes closes the door on the UK. They do, however, reward students who plan early, prepare honestly and document everything properly. This guide explains each change in plain language, what it means for you specifically as a student applying from Nepal, and what to do about it.
Quick answer: The UK is still fully open to genuine Nepali students. Apply for your Graduate visa by 31 December 2026 to keep the 2-year post-study work period; if you submit your Student visa application on or after 30 November 2026, budget for the higher maintenance amounts; and prepare for both a university pre-CAS interview and a possible UKVI credibility interview.
UK Visas and Immigration has always had the power to interview Student visa applicants to assess whether they are a genuine student — someone who intends to study, has chosen a course for sensible academic and career reasons, and understands the financial commitment. In 2026, UKVI is applying this test more consistently and more rigorously, particularly for applicants from South Asia.
An interview may be conducted by video, or by phone. If your answers are vague, inconsistent with your documents, or sound memorised, the caseworker can refuse the application on genuineness grounds even if every document is in order.
Prepare, but do not script. Practise answering the questions above in your own words with a counsellor. Make sure every fact you state matches your Statement of Purpose, your CAS and your financial documents. If there is a gap in your study history or a change of field, be ready to explain it directly.
AIP runs mock UKVI credibility interviews for every UK applicant before the visa application is submitted.
From 1 June 2026, the Home Office tightened the Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) framework that every UK university must pass to keep its student sponsor licence. Two of the main performance thresholds were tightened and a new Red/Amber/Green rating system for sponsors was introduced.
The practical effect for you: a visa refusal, a course withdrawal or a non-enrolment now costs the university more than it used to. Universities therefore cannot afford to issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to a student they are not confident about.
Treat the university’s pre-CAS interview as seriously as the visa interview — a weak performance here ends the application before it reaches UKVI. Submit complete, consistent documents the first time. Universities are far less willing to “wait and see” on a borderline file than they were in 2024.
The Graduate Route — often called the post-study work visa or PSW — currently allows international graduates to stay and work in the UK for 2 years after completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree (3 years after a PhD).
Under the Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules published on 14 October 2025, for Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027, the period for bachelor’s and master’s graduates is reduced to 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates keep 3 years.
The rule is triggered by the date of your Graduate visa application, not the date you started your course.
| Your situation | Graduate Route length |
|---|---|
| Graduate visa application submitted on or before 31 December 2026 | 2 years |
| Graduate visa application submitted on or after 1 January 2027 (bachelor’s / master’s) | 18 months |
| PhD or doctoral graduate, any application date | 3 years |
Example: If you start a one-year master’s in September 2026 and complete it in September 2027, you will apply for the Graduate visa after 1 January 2027 — so plan for 18 months. Students who completed their degree in 2026 and apply before 31 December 2026 still receive the full 2 years.
To obtain a UK Student visa you must show that you can cover your first-year tuition fees (minus anything already paid, as stated on your CAS) plus living costs for each month of your course, up to a maximum of 9 months.
The Home Office’s Statement of Changes HC 584, published on 3 September 2026, raises the monthly living-cost amounts for Student visa applications made on or after 30 November 2026:
| Study location | Until 29 Nov 2026 | From 30 Nov 2026 | Maximum for 9 months (new) |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 / month | £1,570 / month | £14,130 |
| Outside London | £1,171 / month | £1,203 / month | £10,827 |
The “London” rate applies if your main study location is in London, regardless of where you choose to live. The increase aligns the visa requirement with the maintenance loan available to UK home students for 2026/27, and the Home Office has indicated it will continue to update the figures annually.
A student joining a master’s outside London with tuition of £16,500, having paid a £3,000 deposit, applying in December 2026 for a January 2027 start:
The Immigration Health Surcharge and the visa application fee are paid separately and are not part of the maintenance calculation, but you must budget for them.
The amounts are only half of it. Refusals in this category are usually about evidence, not the total:
If your Student visa application will be submitted before 30 November 2026, the current amounts apply. If it will be submitted on or after 30 November, plan your finances against the new figures now — the £288–£369 difference is small compared with the cost of a refusal for insufficient funds.
It is worth being clear about the things that remain the same in 2026, because a lot of misinformation circulates on social media:
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 June 2026 | Stricter sponsor compliance (BCA) rules in force — universities screen harder before CAS |
| 30 November 2026 | New maintenance amounts apply to Student visa applications submitted on or after this date |
| 31 December 2026 | Last day to submit a Graduate visa application and receive 2 years |
| 1 January 2027 | Graduate Route becomes 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates |
| January 2027 intake | First intake fully affected by the new maintenance amounts |
| September 2027 intake | Applications open from late 2026 — plan finances against the new figures |

The criteria are not harder for a genuine, well-prepared student. What has changed is that weak or inconsistent applications are more likely to be stopped — either at the university’s pre-CAS stage or at a UKVI credibility interview. Preparation, honesty and complete documentation matter more than before.
You must show your outstanding first-year tuition plus living costs for up to 9 months. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026, living costs are £1,570 per month in London (£14,130 for 9 months) or £1,203 per month outside London (£10,827 for 9 months). Before 30 November 2026 the amounts are £1,529 and £1,171 respectively.
Only if your Graduate visa application is submitted on or before 31 December 2026. Applications made on or after 1 January 2027 by bachelor’s and master’s graduates receive 18 months. PhD graduates receive 3 years regardless of date.
Most likely, yes. A one-year master’s starting in September 2026 finishes in autumn 2027, so your Graduate visa application will fall after 1 January 2027 and you should plan for 18 months.
Most UK universities now do, usually by video call. The questions cover your course choice, your career plan, your finances and your understanding of the university. A poor pre-CAS interview means no CAS, so prepare for it as seriously as the visa interview.
IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and other UKVI-approved Secure English Language Tests. Many universities also accept their own assessments for degree-level study. AIP offers IELTS Academic and PTE Academic preparation classes.
Not if you are studying a taught bachelor’s or master’s degree. Dependants are permitted only for PhD and other research-based doctoral students and for government-sponsored students.
Rules change. Your plan should not have to. Since 2013, AIP Global Education Partner — a Ministry of Education–approved consultancy — has guided thousands of Nepali students to UK universities with honest advice, properly prepared documents and interview preparation built around the questions UKVI and universities actually ask.
